Electrification in Zambia

Zambia’s electricity access rate is 31% overall, approximately 47% in urban and peri-urban areas, and only 4% in rural areas. The Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ), recognizing the potential positive impact of access to reliable, quality electricity services, as part of Vision 2030, aims to achieve 90% electrification in urban and peri-urban areas and 51% in rural areas by 2030.

This Portal provides useful information to developers and investors aiming to engage in off-grid electricity services in Zambia, including in mini-grids and solar home systems. It aggregates information across the policy and regulatory framework, licensing and permitting processes, financing options, stakeholders, and available geospatial data.
The Zambia Off-Grid Electricity Portal aims to improve access to information on the policy, legal and regulatory requirements and processes by aggregating the licensing and permitting procedures, as well as to information available by international development partners in a single point. In addition, information on financing and support options, technical standards and specifications for mini-grid development and roster of developers for match-making purposes will be also of significant help to potential investors.

The Zambia Off-Grid Electricty Portal was developed in order to facilitate off-grid electrification project developers by providing a one-stop information resource for matters of licensing as well as other aspects pertaining to such an investment.

The Zambia Off-Grid Electricity Portal aims to provide specific and comprehensive information to developers and / or investors aiming to engage in off-grid electricity supply business in rural areas of Zambia. Specifically, it aims to support:

  • Development of isolated mini-grids for electricity distribution
  • Off-grid electricity generation for own use
  • Other off-grid electricity supply options, e.g. solar home systems, etc.
